Philippine Civil Society and the Globalization Discourse

Maria Ela Atienza, Clarinda Lusterio Berja, Zuraida Mae D. Cabilo, Mara Yasmin S.P. Baviera, Dina Marie B. Delias

This book represents the findings conducted by the University of the Philippines Third World Studies Center (UP TWSC) from 2007 to 2008. The project explores the various dimensions of human security as perceived and experienced by individuals in the community, major stakeholders and dutybearers, as well as the marginalized groups in selected conflict areas in the Philippines. It aims to develop a human security index that would serve as a planning and evaluation tool to guide policy making of key government agencies, civil society organizations, and non-government organizations. The proposed index is envisioned to describe the scope and magnitude of human security in the Philippine context as it incorporates dimensions, which need to be taken into account in the process of conflict prevention and peace building.

The workshop concentrated on Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, due to their similarities in terms of: (1) the influential role of the military and militarist thinking, (2) process of democratization and state consolidation, and (3) presence of peacebuilding activities, grounded on comparable historical experience.

People, Profit, and Politics: State-Civil Society Relations in the Context of Globalization

Edited by Wui Lopez, Ma. Glenda S. and Teresa S. Encarnacion Tadem

The project investigates two interrelated aspects of state-civil society relations: how civil-society actors engage with official state agencies through various formal and informal strategies of dialogue, negotiation, and bargaining; and the extent to which civil-society actors have been able to influence governmental policy making. Published in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme.

Philippine Democracy Agenda, Volume 3: Civil Society Making Civil Society. Quezon City

Edited by Miriam Coronel Ferrer

The third volume in the series examines the evidence of a ‘strong’ civil society in the Philippines, a prominent force in advancing democratization. At the same time, the case studies point to the tensions and conflicts that are also a feature of civil society, including problems of uneven development and power relations; economic, gender and cultural inequities; differences in political orientation and organizational practices.
