Entitled, “Social Movements and Democracy: The Clash of Old and New Social Movements in Egypt,” this is lecture one of ” The Promise of Tahrir Square,” this year’s Social Movements in the South Lecture Tour sponsored by SEPHIS and organized by TWSC. Dr. Mustapha Kamel Al-Sayyid, Professor of Political Science from the American University in Cairo, is lecturer for this year’s series. In this lecture, which was held last January 16, 2011at the Claro M. Recto Conference Hall, Faculty Center, UP Diliman, Dr. Al-Sayyid talked about the major role players in the Egyptian revolution last January 2011. Dr. Francisco Nemenzo Jr., Professor Emeritus of the University of the Philippines, offered incisive comments regarding Dr. Al-Sayyid’s presentation, thus initiating a lively discussion during the open forum portion.

Entitled, “Social Movements’ Strategies and Modes of Engagement with the State and Non-State Actors: Comparison between Old and New Social Movements of Egypt,” this is lecture two of ” The Promise of Tahrir Square,” this year’s Social Movements in the South Lecture Tour sponsored by SEPHIS and organized by TWSC. Dr. Mustapha Kamel Al-Sayyid, Professor of Political Science from the American University in Cairo, is lecturer for this year’s series. In this lecture, which was held last January 17, 2011at the Claro M. Recto Conference Hall, Faculty Center, UP Diliman, Dr. Al-Sayyid discussed in detail the two types of social movements prominent in the Egyptian revolution. Dr. Amado M. Mendoza Jr., Professor of Political Science of the University of the Philippines, was reactor to the lecture.
