This is an attempt to understand the nature and character of democracy in Malaysia today. In order to do this, it is necessary to examine the history and background of the country to see if elements of democratic governance and democratic conduct were present in the earlier ‘feudal’ phase. The colonial period will also be studied for the same purpose, after which we shall analyze contemporary Malaysia.
